This is how optical fiber works, a transparent core and a transparent annulus with differing indexes.

An important thing to consider is a thing called the evanescent wave. Though a beam of light may be reflected at a surface (where two materials meet) the photon is not a point but a statistical distribution of probabilities. Part of the wave nature of the photon does travel through the material it is being reflected from hence the index of the reflecting material does matter... a whole bunch.Norman Hairstonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10483780552567247916noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9123387818716665710.post-4907837493230289312013-05-13T12:05:11.019-05:002013-05-13T12:05:11.019-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Norman Hairstonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10483780552567247916noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9123387818716665710.post-75711602116297916812013-05-13T01:36:12.094-05:002013-05-13T01:36:12.094-05:00Correct me if 'im wrong but there's a big ...Correct me if 'im wrong but there's a big difference between refraction and reflection.

The angle of reflection merely depends on the angle of incidence of the light, no matter what the material is.

Refraction is the change of direction of the light between diferent materials, so maybe the only thing affected would be the light coming out the screen at a wider angle.

Maybe it'll be a bit dimmer but with a thin screen you probably won't notice a big difference. One of the larger problems with a classic crystalline material, such as sapphire, is that the properties are not isotropic. Some planes are stronger than others and the overall properties of a crystalline window depend on which particular plane is cut.Norman Hairstonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10483780552567247916noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9123387818716665710.post-26702096333400201402013-04-15T13:43:11.220-05:002013-04-15T13:43:11.220-05:00Two back stories: 1) most of the men in the pictu...Two back stories: 1) most of the men in the picture did not come back from Korea. 2) My father managed to get a promotion, to corporal, at a time when the very idea of a black person having authority over anyone White sent some people catatonic. In silicon Valley, Al was the Steve Jobs of the previous era. In no case did I ever have a problem getting through to anyone in the valley or getting them to talk about their business. They, of course, do not want to waste their time with you but in general, if it involves something of interest to them conversation in the valley flows freely.

It may well have been, absent Wendell reaching out to Steve that Steve would have called Wendell about the coverglass need for the iPhone. However, absent the reach out from Corning, when Steve did not get through, his next call would have been to another glassmaker rather than to me.Norman Hairstonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10483780552567247916noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9123387818716665710.post-54788763731743152512013-02-12T14:00:47.136-06:002013-02-12T14:00:47.136-06:00Unlike glass, crystals, especially single crystals...Unlike glass, crystals, especially single crystals, are anisotropic. Being that the window for the iPhone 5 was so small, I can imagine that Apple was getting byproduct from other applications; bits and pieces of various crystal planes. As with glass and glass chemistry, the supply base for batteries is thin due the concentration of knowledge about the product in a few places.

After the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami, electronics makers were relieved to find that although the limited battery supply chain was disrupted, the impact was minimal.
